Cleaner Agent is a GitHub App designed to assist with repository maintenance, organization, and quality assurance across GitHub organizations.
It operates as an assistive automation agent, analyzing GitHub events and providing contextual feedback to help teams maintain healthy, well-structured repositories — without replacing human decision-making.
The app is domain-agnostic and can be used across new or legacy repositories, regardless of programming language or technology stack.
Cleaner Agent focuses on repository hygiene and operational consistency by observing events such as pull requests, issues, and comments.
Rather than enforcing strict policies, the agent provides guidance, visibility, and suggestions, allowing maintainers to decide how and when to act.
- Analyze pull requests for structural and organizational signals
- Provide automated, contextual feedback via comments
- Apply or update labels based on repository state
- Assist with issue and PR triage
- Validate the presence of common repository artifacts (e.g., README, CI configuration)
- Operate safely using GitHub’s App permission model
Cleaner Agent subscribes to GitHub events and evaluates repository metadata when those events occur.
Based on predefined rules and contextual analysis, the agent may:
- Post informational comments
- Suggest improvements
- Apply labels
- Flag items for further review
All actions are executed with explicit, minimal permissions granted at installation time.
Cleaner Agent follows the principle of least privilege.
Typical permissions include:
- Read access to repository metadata
- Read/write access to issues and pull requests
- Read access to repository contents when necessary
The app does not execute code, clone repositories, or modify source files by default.
Authentication is handled using GitHub’s GitHub Apps security model, leveraging short-lived installation tokens.
Cleaner Agent is installed directly from GitHub as a GitHub App.
- Click Install on GitHub
- Select the target organization or account
- Choose the repositories where Cleaner Agent should operate
- Confirm the requested permissions
The app can be installed on:
- All repositories
- A selected subset of repositories (recommended for initial rollout)
Cleaner Agent is designed to be non-intrusive.
- It does not block merges
- It does not enforce policies
- It does not replace code reviews
Instead, it acts as a supportive assistant, providing early feedback and operational insights while keeping humans in control.
The project is built with extensibility in mind.
Future iterations may include:
- Additional analysis rules
- Organization-specific configurations
- Deeper automation workflows
- Optional integrations with CI/CD pipelines
Cleaner Agent is currently in early development.
Features and behavior may evolve as the project matures and real-world feedback is incorporated.
This project is open source.
